On Saturday 14th September, 21 Ringers/non-ringers, cyclists/non-cyclists took part in a short ringing tour that was part of a larger cycle tour organised in memory of the late wife of one of my friends. It was organised on the day of the Historic Churches Ride and Stride with the main group cycling a 35 mile route around north Leicestershire, visiting churches along the way. The ringing tour was 10 miles long, with both routes starting at Swithland and finishing at Rothley.
Starting with the recently re-hung 6 at Swithland, the ringers route took us to the 6 at Woodhouse and the 8 at Quorn before finishing with the 6 at Rothley. We had a picnic lunch in Quorn Park and there was a welcome cup of tea with scones, jam and cream waiting for us in Rothley Church Rooms at the end. The weather was perfect, and there was a wide range of ringing from rounds and call changes, to some excellent Yorkshire S Major at Quorn. One puncture on the way to the start appeared to be the only problem, but there were a few tired bodies at the end of the day amongst those of us that are only occasional cyclists.
Thank you to all those that came along and joined in and I understand that the Historic Churches Trust received a considerable donation via the event.
