Where, Oh Where, Is This?

When the items gifted to the Guild from the family of Alf Ballard were sorted out, a mystery photograph was revealed …….

8 bells, 3 small boys, and a flat-capped chap aged about 70.

There are metal railings and gate (so probably pre-war), a mysterious cogged wheel (possibly part of a windlass/hoist), a baby’s pram on the street (those were the days!), and a small building that looks suspiciously like a public loo…………….

Can anyone out there shed any light on this?

  1. Surely this was taken in Hinckley Churchyard…… perhaps when the bells were rehung at some time? The Church School would be on the left hand side of the picture, Flavells Solicitors on the right, and in the background is the Midland bank.

  2. And furthermore, if it’s any help, the bells were recast with additional metal, in 1925!

  3. Definitely Hinckley. This is the old (19 cwt) ring on their way to Taylor’s for recasting. The bells returned in 1925 so this photo is going to date from late 1924ish. Amazing to think that the total cost of recasting and rehanging was £1000 – who said something about “the pound in your pocket” …………….?
