Striking Success at St Margaret’s

On 24 September, Leicester competed in the fourth Robert B Smith Trophy held at St Margaret’s, Leicester. The test piece was 240 Stedman Cinques and six teams competed, including a ‘scratch band’ put together on the day of the competition.

Upon arrival at St Margaret’s, tea, coffee, bacon butties, sausage cobs and cakes were provided, setting everyone up for the day ahead. Following the welcome and housekeeping announcements we learnt that Hawkear was available to the judges, who would be deliberating within a nearby caravan. The draw then took place with Leicester drawn to ring fourth.

As the first team prepared to ring, beer and cider was swiftly made available in the Church yard. Fortunately, Leicester’s 13.00 placement allowed plenty of time for some of the band to take advantage of the refreshments. After ringing, the Leicester Band descended the tower, seemingly pleased with their performance.

More food was provided in the form of a BBQ lunch. As the day progressed, one of the beers proved very popular, causing one well known ringer to run out of Salvation. While the stewards took a beer break, Mulberry the dog stood guard at the tower steps.

At 15.45 the judges emerged from the caravan to provide their feedback and the much-anticipated results. To the bands delight, it was announced that Leicester achieved 1st place, scoring 72% with a peal speed of 3 hours 31 minutes. This was the first time a Leicester band had won a twelve-bell competition since 1976.

Following the results, many headed to The Salmon for more beer. A friendly darts match was followed by a “moving” rendition of ‘Islands in the Stream’ performed by Terry Astill and Luke Groom (Mark Pendery provided backing vocals).

Congratulations to the Leicester Band!
