An Annual event : Approximately 60 children (aged 4-5) visited the church from the school …………..They were divided into groups of 8-10 with supervisors
One at a time, each group came into the Tower where I sat them down on the ringing mats at the far side of the Tower (sitting them down makes crowd control easier)
Each group then thought HARD about why we ring bells (oh the little furrowed brows!!!!!)
- Then I told them for ‘telling people to come to church, ringing for happy times, ringing for sad times, ringing because we like the noise’
- Then I told them the bells are at the top of the tower, and a rope is used to pull them, and we all solemnly counted 8 ropes..
- Then I told them about little bells with high voices and big bells with low voices and told them about the weight of the little bell (expressed in weight of small children) , and the big bell (expressed in weights of big cows)
THEN the big moment …. Each child invited to chime the 2nd for a few dings, with my hand firmly clutching the sally way above their heads
They were so happy, and they all want to come back when they are 11
It was hilarious ………
This is the email received from the school.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you all for your time today. We had such a wonderful time coming to visit you all and the children learnt so much. Being allowed to ring the bells was a definite highlight for all of the Caterpillars and Bumble Bees!
Please pass on our thanks to everyone else who was involved too,
Margie Brimacombe
