President’s Message: April 2025

Hello everyone and welcome to the 2025 Spring Edition of the Newsletter, I hope your towers are warming up and ropes are drying out!

I’ve had another quarter dominated by Safeguarding (nobody mentioned this in the job description!!!). Great news – the Guild General Committee has ratified the LDG Safeguarding Policy that our Safeguarding Officers, Will and Ian, have worked so hard on. The latest version of this will always be available for you to access through the link in the Safeguarding tab on our website. Many thanks to Will and Ian for getting this ready and implemented, it’s an important source of reference for members and is also a requirement for our charitable status and insurance.

In recent weeks we have seen the Diocese – effectively our host organisation –  start to make some of its previously advisory Safeguarding practices (such as registers) mandatory. Local Diocesan Parish Safeguarding Officers and Co-ordinators will be contacting Tower Captains to help them implement these updated requirements and will be reporting through the Parish Safeguarding Dashboards the status of these measures. The LDG will also be notified directly by the Diocesan Safeguarding Team so we will make you aware of further changes and updates as soon as we are notified.

I fully support the Diocese in it’s efforts to put a robust Safeguarding framework in place and I would ask our members to do the same, if you have any queries our Safeguarding Officers are happy to try answer them – just send them an email on safeguarding@leicesterdg.org.uk. Your Parish Safeguarding teams should also be getting actively involved with this. Please keep your communications civil and polite with these teams, they are volunteers and doing their best to ensure we have a safe environment for all our members to ring in, especially our young ringers.

The ‘LDG at 80 study’ which will look at how we might run the LDG in the future will soon be launched; I have representatives from most of the Districts in place now plus some of our ‘senior’ members with a lot of experience and knowledge ready to take a fresh look at this. Thanks to all who have volunteered so far and I look forward to seeing you soon at the kick off meeting that will be arranged soon.

Happy ringing!

Pete Brown
LDG President
