From the Districts

Melton District

Melton District had it’s January meeting at Wymondham (heavy going 6) in January, Twyford (best 6 in the District …… but then I’m biased) in February and a change in venue from Eaton to Buckminster in March (due to problems with Eaton’s tower).

All of the meetings were well attended especially Buckminster where we had many of our new members and some potential new members turn up for a ring – it was great to see people out for the District Meetings which we aim to make broad and inclusive.

On the 21st of February a Melton Band rang the final quarter peal on the Harby bells before Taylor’s started work on augmenting them to a six and adding more equipment to turn it into a teaching tower for the area.

On the 5th of April we are running a ‘listening’ course (organised by the E&R committee ) to help the new ringers from the bands recently formed at Gaddesby, Saltby, Hoby and Kirby Bellars improve their striking. Thanks to Andrew Young and Chris Rudge for running the course and all those who’ve volunteered to help out.

Loughborough District

The Loughborough District has been mainly dormant since Covid, due to a lack of officers.  We have held the occasional practice and the District Chairman has tried to keep people informed via the mailing lists.

We held a District Practice in February and discussed the way forward.  We are very lucky that Susie Scales has offered her services as the new District Secretary.

Since that practice we have held our first committee meeting since before Covid and have drafted an outline plan for practices for the year ahead (subject to confirmation with towers).  Sally Mousley has also offered to help on the Committee.

We shall therefore be holding a belated 2024 AGM in order to elect officers at our next practice which is to be held at Loughborough on 23rd April 7.30-9pm.  Do come along and support the District at that event and as it hopefully gets “back on its feet” after a long gap.

Leicester District

Leicester District continue to hold practices on week nights, usually on the night that the host tower normally holds its practice. In January this was at Whetstone. February’s was cancelled at the last minute as it was due to be held at St Mary de Castro (bells temporarily out of action during building works), and March’s practice was at Knighton. The April practice is at Aylestone on 2nd April.

Harborough District

Following the District AGM last year, Harborough doesn’t currently have a secretary. District Practices are still being organised though, please check the calendar on the Guild website for more details.
